Applications & Industrial Uses of Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD)

Field of polymer materials

  • Unsaturated polyester resin modification: It can replace phthalic anhydride or maleic anhydride in the production of modified unsaturated polyester resin, improving the resin’s resistance to hydrolysis, peeling, and leveling properties, and reducing the amount of styrene used. It is widely applied in fiberglass reinforced plastic products, artificial marble, yacht manufacturing, wind turbine blades, and other fields.
  • Polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD) : It is produced through ring-opening translocation polymerization (ROMP) using ultra-high purity DCPD as raw material. It features high strength, high toughness, low density, and corrosion resistance, and is suitable for large and complex castings such as automotive parts (like buffer plates and mudguards), sports equipment, industrial storage tanks, and transformers.
  • Cycloolefin copolymers (COC/COP) : As a basic raw material, they are used to synthesize cycloolefin copolymers. These materials feature high transparency, high heat resistance, and low water absorption, and are applied in high-end optical and electronic fields such as medical materials, mobile phones, computers, and LCD TVS.

Rubber industry

  • Ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM) third monomer: It is an important third monomer of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), which can increase the vulcanization speed, heat aging resistance and chemical corrosion resistance of rubber, and is widely used in rubber products such as wires and cables, automotive parts and waterproof membranes.

Fine chemicals field

  • Adamantane synthesis: Adamantane is produced through hydrogenation and isomerization reactions and is used in fields such as pharmaceutical intermediates, epoxy resins, photosensitive materials, isomerization catalysts, and modified lubricating oils.
  • Preparation of ferrocene: It reacts with iron powder or ferrous chloride to form ferrocene, which is used as a rocket fuel additive, gasoline anti-knock agent, rubber and silicone resin curing agent, ultraviolet absorber, etc.
  • Pesticide intermediate: It is used in the synthesis of 2-chloro-5-chloromethylpyridine (CCMP) and serves as an intermediate for pesticides such as imidacloprid, acetamiprid, and thiamethoxam.
Fragrances and flame retardants: Fine chemical products such as fragrances and flame retardants can be synthesized.

Energy sector

  • High-energy fuel additive: Its fourth hydride can be used as a high-energy fuel additive for rockets and jet engines to enhance fuel performance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What is Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD)?
A: Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD, CAS 77-73-6) is a chemical intermediate formed by the Diels‑Alder dimerization of two cyclopentadiene molecules.

Q: What is Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) used for?
A: Dicyclopentadiene is primarily used as a raw material in the production of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), hydrocarbon resins, EPDM elastomers, cyclic olefin copolymers (COC), and polydicyclopentadiene (pDCPD). End-use applications span automotive parts, construction adhesives and coatings, marine composites, electrical components, adhesives, inks, and specialty chemicals including pharmaceuticals and agrochemical intermediates.

Q: How should DCPD be stored and handled safely?
A: DCPD is a flammable liquid and must be stored in a flammable liquids area away from oxidizers and sources of ignition. DCPD may form explosive peroxides if stored in contact with air. Use appropriate PPE including chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. Ensure adequate ventilation and have eyewash and quick-drench facilities available.
